The Current State of the NCAA

As major schools continue to abandon their current conferences at an alarming rate for what they think are greener pastures, the common theme is that their governing body, the NCAA, has little to no control of the situation. There’s also the other issues facing the NCAA, like the lawsuits filed against schools we seem to hear about every other week; the ongoing debate as to whether the NCAA should pay student-athletes; or the annual public cry for a playoff system in college football. Isn’t it time for Congress or some larger body to step in? I’m not one for our government focusing on sports when there are much bigger issues in the world, but something has to happen soon.

NFL in London Can London Sustain Having an NFL Franchise? As we head into week seven of the NFL season, America’s most successful professional sports league heads across “the pond” for its annual game in London. This year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play host to the Chicago Bears at Wembley Stadium in the fifth annual Pepsi Max International Series.

With all the talk of globalization and expansion, would Roger Goodell and the NFL be wise to place a franchise in London? The NFL has played one regular season game in London each year since 2007.

Just last week NFL owners voted to keep playing games in England through the 2016 season with the possibility of more than one game each year.

nfl u dolphinsfans 580 e1318450391163 Why the Dolphins Need to “Suck for Luck”I don’t envy Miami Dolphins owner Steve Ross right now.

Actually, let me rephrase that.  I envy his billions of dollars, owning an NFL franchise, and living in Miami…but I don’t envy the decision he’s currently being faced with right now.

His team is 0-4.  His fans are dwindling.  His coach is about as lame-duck as you can get.

He has the unfortunate burden of owning a team in a city where most would rather lay on the beach and people-watch than watch a bad football team.  The Miami Heat feature two of the top three superstars in the world. The new-named Miami Marlins are moving to a new ballpark and feature a headline-grabbing, bombastic new manager.

2011 nhl winter classic logo Winter Classic Breathes New Life Into NHLLeagues such as the NFL, MLB and NBA have historically overshadowed the NHL. However, in 2008, the NHL introduced a new and exciting tradition. In addition to ringing in the New Year with confetti and champagne, the NHL welcomed 2008 with the first ever Bridgestone Winter Classic outdoor hockey game. The unique throwback style of the event, in addition to strong social marketing efforts brought an enormous amount of hype to the sport of ice hockey, grabbing the interest of hardcore hockey fans as well as the general public.

Hockey took a serious hit six years ago, when it was announced there would be a lockout for the 2004-2005 season. In 2005, the NHL made a somewhat strong return, with increases in overall game attendance, but television ratings continued to remain low.

That is until 2008.
